It’s not Easter but let’s talk ‘Bunnies’ anyway

26 Sep 2020

Dear LPG,

A few years ago my son finally got married, bought his first home and, not long after, he announced that he was going to get a ‘house bunny’.  I had a few misgivings with that idea because I always thought that the rabbit hutch was something you kept in the garden once you had a few young children, so that they could learn something about being responsible.  But I recently found a few facts that might make them a good pet prospect for an older person.

The first thing I always think of when I think of rabbits is that phrase we use for mums of very large families.  We think of them’ breeding like rabbits’, but they can now be spayed in the same way as cats and dogs.  I have to admit that my biggest worry would be that they don’t appear to be house trainable, but if you do want a pet perhaps they can be a good idea.  For an older person they have the advantage of being relatively small and unlike dogs they do not require walking every day which makes them good pets for the less mobile.  They also don’t feel the need to take themselves off and leave their owners worrying about when or if they are going to come back when you want them to.  I noted what SW, who wrote in celebration of National Cat Day (►►►), had to say on the subject of getting them to come in at night. There is something settling about knowing that those of us who have become used to early nights will always know where their pet is if it is a rabbit.

We all know that every day has its celebratory attributes in this 21st century of ours and, amongst others, today is National Bunny Day which was the memory jogger for this post.

My son is still thinking about it two years and two children later, but having learned about the significance of today with a bit of notice, I thought it would be good to write this little message in recognition of the celebration and, while there are pros and cons about having a pet rabbit, perhaps the news might offer a new possible choice for any LPG reader who is looking for a pet at the moment.
