Happy divorce day?

04 Jan 2021

Dear LPG,

If LPG is able to print this message on the day that I have requested, nearly a year will have gone by since I wrote it because I found out a very interesting fact on February 5th last year which was prompted by an event that will mean nothing at all to most LPG readers… but all will become clear as I continue to write…

The fact is that today (or at least the day that I penned this message) is the day that my very ex-husband will celebrate his 74th birthday. This is of no consequence to anyone except him, although I suspect that many divorced members of the population spare a thought for their ex-other halves when their birthdays come around.

From what I have read, I have found out that ‘Divorce Day’ is more of a calendar event for solicitors and lawyers because, although enjoying a family Christmas is what is supposed to happen, that week between Christmas and New Year can often be the straw that breaks the marital camel’s back for quite a few couples.

The first English law allowing divorce was passed in 1858 but back then it was an expensive business. The good news is that I found a few statistics which show that since the turn of this century divorce has been on the decline in the UK, but so has marriage which might just be the reason why.

But moving away from the legal, historical and statistical aspects of the subject for a moment and focussing on the personal.  I know that Many readers of LPG will have them, and perhaps my message will provoke them to dig deep into their memories where those not so happy historical events are hidden.  There will be many divorced couples who have an amicable relationship while others prefer never to see their other halves again which makes family weddings, christenings and funerals a bit difficult but I hope that unofficially this can be another day in the year when, however long ago, whatever the circumstances and regardless of the final outcome, each divorcee can remember the happy times that their marriage brought before it all went pear shaped…
