Have you found anything of value at the bottom of your draws?

18 Jul 2020

Dear LPG,

I have been lucky enough not to fall ill during the past month or two, which means that being stuck at home has been a bit of a trial, but I have not entirely wasted my time.  I have been following the official advice during my time at home and I made a list of all those little jobs that I have been meaning to do over the years; the ones that I just never get round to doing.  I haven’t got that far but I have made a little progress.

One of the jobs on the list that I have been really avoiding is just taking a look through all those draws and boxes that accumulate as the years go by and I have found some interesting bits and bobs which slow the process of getting on with the job down as they bring back many memories which impede the exercise.

One of the things that I keep coming across is old coins and notes. Some so old that I hardly recognise them as English any more.  But this got me thinking.  When a new version of a note comes out in England we are usually given a certain amount of time before the note that it replaces is no longer legal tender, although no date has yet been given so far for the £20.00 note that was replaced in February.  It could be hard enough dealing with the notes that have just gone out of date and I have to say that some of the ones I have found are really old and, when I added up the value they have come to a tidy little sum.

I found a website which assures that UK bank notes, as long as they were issued by the Bank of England and no matter how old they are, will always be worth their face value and there are lots of them which have so far never been returned to the bank. I found some information about getting really old money swapped of currency that you can spend, which you can do at the Bank of England.

You can send your money by post or you can visit their dedicated till which is to be found in their branch at Threadneedle Street, London, EC2R 8HA.

They have a lot of information online and will answer your questions on telephone number 020 3461 4444 during office hours.

While I was reading I learned that the £50.00 is due for a remake sometime in 2021.
