Beware of overpaying for a TV licence…

21 Jul 2020

Dear LPG,

I just want to let readers know that during the middle of the lock-down I received an email which worried me somewhat.  We were all warned well before the lock-down that the automatic free over 75 TV licences would be phased out.  I suppose I can still call myself a relatively young pensioner but our license has been free because my mother and I live together and she is in her early 90s now.  She got a letter on the subject at the end of last year, but I received an email informing that I needed to pay £12.00 in mid-April.

In mid-April I telephoned and heard lots of recorded options which led me to the fact that there were no advisors due to Coronavirus.  Now that the lock-down is coming to an end,  I tried again yesterday and was told that the TV licensing people have not yet started to send out reminders, and will not until August.  They also told me that they send all their communications by post, and that there is an email scam being circulated.

So, I would just like to pre-warn anyone who might receive such an email in the near future to do nothing, and especially avoid clicking on the invitation to pay.  They also assured me that they don’t send emails and are aware of the scams that are bring reported.

I just wanted to make sure that LPG readers are aware and do not fall into this trap.
