The under/over 45 divideā€¦

07 Aug 2020

Dear LPG,

I often wonder about all the technology that the people who are roughly under forty-five just take for granted.

I know that I have just made a very general statement but there does seem to be a metaphorical line which can be drawn in the national population at about that age-point. There appear to be many more IT ignoramus’s over the age of forty-five than there are who are younger, even though there are also many older people who are perfectly at home with a computer, tablet and mobile smart or iPhone. But you would be hard-pushed to find a youngster without some knowledge of them.

There is so much information out there in the world that I defy anyone to know everything, but it is hard to find a toddler who does not know where the ‘on’ button is on their parent’s mobile phone or tablet, if they don’t actually have their own, these days.

I can remember when I thought that things would last for ever but these days everything is old as soon as you get it.  The day you buy your new mobile phone you are likely to go home and see an advert on the telly detailing the new better version which is exclusive and available just for you.

To me, it seems so wrong to see the amount of people who are ready to throw away all sorts of technological things just because there is a better version on the market.   I think that by the time the new version is being showcased, my brain is just about getting used to the old one though perhaps that is a symptom of being on the older side of the dividing line…
