What can you do for them after all they have done for you?

29 Aug 2020

Dear LPG,

There are no two ways about it, as we get older, we ladies spend a lot of time looking at what happens to our faces.  I read with interest what BN had to say on that subject (►►►) and I have tried a few of her suggestions.  I suppose that it’s the bit of you that everyone sees first and the window to their perception of the person that you are when someone first meets you.

I think that it is good that the human race has found ways to live longer and that, now that there are more of us around, we are no longer judged completely on the way we look but, after looking in the mirror and depending on how much we do, I think that our hands need our attention too.

Over the years we have put them in all sorts of chemicals while cleaning this and that around the house.  Just think of the damage that factory work, cooking, washing, and dousing them in extreme and opposing temperatures has done.

For the most part men just get on with it, but there is something special about having your nails and hands pampered if you are a lady. If this was not the case, there would not be as many shops that specialise in nail and hand care.  The problem is that for many pensioners the cost of the cheapest of these treatments can be outside their price range, so the answer is to do it yourself.

I have ‘done it myself’ since well before the nail shops came into being but, as I have got older, I find my hands are not as steady and I miss with the nail polish more than I used to. But before I even start to think about that, there are the wrinkles and spots.

They say that You Tube can teach you anything and I have seen some ways to be kind to hands without breaking the bank.  I have found a few things that we can do that are not too expensive and, having tried one or two, I would like to pass on what I have learnt to the LPG readers who worry, just a little, when they see the toll that all their activities have had on their hands, and question the effect when they look down and see them in action.
