Get the big bones out today!

25 Aug 2020

Dear LPG,

Did you know that tomorrow is national Dog Day?

It all started in 2004 and was the brainchild of a lady called Colleen Paige who also inspired a day for cats and puppies.

We are known as a nation of pet lovers and our dogs are the most popular pets in the country.  I found internet evidence that nearly ¼ of households included a dog last year although, as we get older, many of us give them up because of their need to be walked; something that often gets harder for us to do with age.  It is also true that, unlike cats, they don’t bother to find or create a hole in the ground before they do the other thing (if you know what I mean).  They leave us to do the bending as we do the tidying up for them, which is one of the other tasks that becomes more challenging as we get on in age.

But they are more ready to interact with us and much more loyal than cats on the whole, and who has ever heard of a guide cat?   Dogs, through the ages, have taken on many jobs.  The already mentioned services they offer the blind which are so special, while they have dragged people through the snow in Scandinavia, saved many a farmer the job of getting the sheep where they need them to be and searched out bombs in the war.  We have all heard about the police dogs that use their sense of smell to sniff out drugs and, with just one sniff of a bit of clothing, they can trace people in a way that no one has ever invented any machine to do (as far as I know).

So today I just wanted to make sure that LPG acknowledges our canine friends on their special day…

…and she also wrote an earlier message with dogs in mind which might be helpful if walking your dog is becoming a little more challenging these days…
