Ladies; by the hair of my chinny chin chin? I say ‘ NO, NO!’.

Dear LPG,

Do you remember the bed time story that was included in many a compendium that you would have heard as a child; the one about the three little pigs?  There are many morals of that story to be considered but ladies, have you considered this one?

This is a subject that has always worried me, and even more so as I have become older. I am now officially a pensioner, and now that I have become a lady of a certain age, I am wondering what other ladies really think.  Perhaps it is a family trait, but I have grown up seeing the older ladies in my family adding another activity to their beauty regime as, from time to time, the tweezers make an appearance, and contact with their chins. When I was still a young thing I witnessed a few older ladies plucking hairs out of their chins and I have to say that it looks like quite a painful activity to me.  I had always expected that, as my mum finds the odd one for removal occasionally, it would be a good idea for me to invest (in a pair of tweezers).

But then came the invention of the epilator and those television adverts that show ladies unreservedly holding them to their chins and telling us how much better they feel for it.  I know that men do it all the time, and I have always accepted that it was a male thing to do, but seeing ladies attacking more than the hair on their legs is quite worrying to me.

I saw yet another advert showing a lady, her chin and one of these things, and my granddaughter who has no sign of facial hair that I can see, tells me that she has one now.  This for me is disturbing news because I do worry about what repeated use of the thing will do for her once she gets to my age.  From what I can see, men in TV adverts are being offered shavers which will all deal with their beards but the worrying trend is that it is becoming more acceptable for ladies to be shown more and more gismos designed to deal with their ‘unwanted hair’, but they look as if they are doing the same thing if you ask me.

I have taken a look on the internet but I have to say that I remain unconvinced, and worry that we might become a nation of hairy women in three or four decade’s time in spite of the evidence I found to the contrary there.

I know that some ladies are ‘hairier’ than others and keeping it at bay on the face must be a real worry for them. I am so grateful that the odd tweeze works for me, but I have to wonder if, though I hope I will not be around to see it, we will all be shaving in the not too distant future.
