Afternoon blinking with your chin on your chest.

27 Sep 2020

Dear LPG,

I have always thought that feeling the need for a little nap in the middle of the afternoon is something that defines the much older pensioner, but while we were all in stay-at-home mode I found that I was feeling the need to adopt this habit too.

I think that I got tired because I was missing being out and about and doing the normal things that keep my mind fully occupied but, now that things are getting back to normal, I am still nodding off every now and then which makes me feel that I have crossed a certain age divide and done it within three months.

I know that the Spanish are famous for their afternoon siestas but we English, well most of the ones that I know who are my sort of age anyway, usually do all their sleeping during the night.  I have to admit to getting up a bit later than I used to when I was fully employed, but I feel that this is one of those privileges that we retired people can afford ourselves. I can’t help but blame the government’s Covid-19 inflicted strategy for finding myself nodding, while watching the telly in the early afternoon, far too often for my liking these days.

Lock-down has the advantage that no one knows about my new habit, but I do, and it worried me so much that I confided in Google who had a few answers for me.  The one thing that really caught my eye is that none of these articles mentioned old age and most indicated that, on the whole, an afternoon nap is not a bad thing.

I have asked LPG to share what I found which has made me feel a bit better about those times when I look at the clock and look again after what my mind assesses to be five minutes, only to find that half an hour has passed while I blinked with my chin on my chest.
