Wearing and watching… sorry washing…

08 Oct 2020

Dear LPG,

I know that I have been boring LPG readers on the continuing subject of masks and readers will all know by now how important I think it is to wear them when getting out and about, but there is one aspect that I have not brought to the fore and that I really believe should be focussed upon.

Many people who are seriously wearing them when they go out to the places where we have been advised that they might be of some value, are opting for the more decorative ones and not the now all-too-familiar disposable light blue paper variety but, whatever your preference, how often are you washing them?

We have all heard it said on the media that touching them with your hands just succeeds in spreading anything that they are catching and potentially passing it on to anything that your fingers come into contact with until those hands are washed, and the real disadvantage of using the arguably more attractive reusable ones is that it is only worth reusing them if you wash them regularly

As with most mask-orientated instructions, there are so many different versions of the best way to keep them clean and effective, so I had a look around the internet to learn a little more about the international thinking on this point.

Finally, some of the links I have chosen reference that it is a good idea to get your iron out because, apart from making a creased one look more cared for, the heat that will be forced through is yet another really good way to make sure that any left-over evidence of the virus is well and truly ousted.

Again I have shared my findings for my fellow readers…
