A message for ‘World Religion day’

LPG found itself inspired by one of Rudy’s messages today; he wrote…

Dear LPG,

I am assuming that most of your readers are like me, having reached pensioner status with most surpassing our three score and ten years.  I have to say that I never dreamed that I would attain that.  But getting here leaves its scars, I am sure I speak for others when I mention that we have lost close love one’s over the years, although we remain grateful for our good fortune in attaining this mature age.

Many elderly individuals spend some of their time following their faith by going to their place of worship each week to get their blessings.  In my case, I have to say that I feel good in the knowledge that I am able to go and praise the Lord for his blessings upon me and others, may it ever be so. I feel the need to say ‘Live long and praise the Lord’.

Rudy Morgan

Rudy’s thought got me thinking about religion in general and just who has faith in what.   One of the best official information sources I could find came from the last census, but that information is nine years old now.  The stats were gathered as a result of a question giving relatively few alternatives but showed 59% of us to be Christian and 5% Muslim while ¼ of the population said they did not believe in anything and the other 11% making up the group who answered ‘I’m not saying’ or ‘I don’t know’.

We then turned to Wikipedia and found this estimation of how many believers there were around the world in 2019.  All this information has to be quite difficult to acquire but, assuming that there is some degree of accuracy, it is interesting to note that the third largest single group in this list, 13.9% were nonreligious but that said, over half the world appears to follow the Christian or Muslin faith, and with so many other faith sects around the world there are a lot of people that still believe in something.

If this is the case, I cannot help but believe that there must be some readers who know and can enlighten us on the views and ethos of some of the lesser known religions throughout the world and we look forward to hearing from them.
