A new look at our places of interest…

13 Dec 2020

Dear LPG,

In spite of the fact that we have not been able to visit anywhere of UK significance for some time now, I was taking a look at your pages not so long ago and found that what NC had to say about the most visited places in the world (►►►) caught my eye.  Her approach was very caught up in the statistics of the subject of taking a holiday, but it inspired me to take a good look at a couple of sets of statistics of my own.

My survey was conducted by me.  When I asked my older friends, I was surprised that many of them have been abroad but relatively few of them have been to see the tourist sites that London has to offer in spite of the fact many of these historical and iconic places of interest are less than ten miles away from Lewisham.  I have to say that I am also guilty.  The only time I ever get out to see what is practically under my nose is when family come to visit from abroad and these days, the lack of parking and all the walking that is entailed in most of these visits is more than I can manage.

But I think that anyone who can find YouTube can find anything these days and when I decided to take a virtual tour of London it did not disappoint.  It is interesting to take a look at our capital city through the camera lens of others and I found it particularly interesting to see what visitors who have travelled from far-away places to see our shores have to say about our closest places of interest.

This year, we have also had Covid-19 making any visits to anywhere particularly challenging even if going for long walks and paying really dearly for something to eat while you are out on the town doesn’t overpower you first.  Just think of the advantages; you don’t have to prepare or make a date in your diary or a packed lunch, and for those who don’t like to go out and about on our own.  Someone else is often doing the talking and you often have a guide to explain what you are looking at for the first time, or to disagree with if you think you know better.   It doesn’t matter how late or early you get started or how dark it is outside, and you can take in the sights in your dressing gown if you really want to.

I have found some foreign tourists video offerings which will bring back all the memories, show you what might have changed since your last real visit and offer some interesting facts that perhaps you didn’t know until now, while you swap all that unnecessary exercise on your feet for an occasional finger tap or two on your phone or tablet screen.

Don’t forget to get the tea and biscuits ready before you go…
