A day when ashes and random kindness meet.

17 Feb 2021

Dear LPG,

We have been under Covid-19 lock and key for so long now that I sometimes think that we will never get free, but having said that anything that keeps the spirits up is a good thing as far as I can see.

I think that our confinement has forced many new habits on us during these days, when every day can so often seem exactly the same as the last, but LPG inspired me to start the day by finding one of the really unusual reasons why each day should be celebrated, and there are some really unusual reasons to be cheerful (or not) which have been given a day of their own to share.

I got up one morning not so long ago, looked at the date and realised that the 1st 12th of 2021 is already history, and when I took a look at what I could celebrate today I learned that February 1st is National Baked Alaska day.  That dessert reminds me of my childhood and I have a few eggs and some ice cream in the freezer so I will have a go later.  I don’t usually, but I cheated and took a sneak peek at what was to come only to find a day that really needs to be celebrated.

If LPG can post this message on the day I have asked, today should double up as Ash Wednesday which is a very poignant day in the Christian calendar when we focus on atoning for all the things we have done wrong, but it is also ‘Random Act of Kindness Day’ which will give us a chance to do something positive in the present while getting over the negative aspects of past regret that today will evoke.

I know that I was thinking in advance, but I tried to think about what kind things you can do while stuck at home and I came up with a few; pick up the phone and call someone you haven’t spoken to for years, release someone from a debt (if you can afford it), compliment someone or apologise to someone.  There are some online lists and I have found a couple, but many haven’t taken the limitations of this pandemic onboard.

So, can I remind everyone to do something random and kind today, to mark the first day of the rest of your life of reformed wrong doing?

SA, Downham.
