Do you decide with your head or your gut?

10 May 2021

Dear LPG,

The discussions around this question have been with us for many years but are we older people more likely to have the right answer…

I think that most will agree with me when I say that we all think a lot more as we get older.  The one gift that retirement does is give us more time to do whatever we want to; especially during the first fifteen years or so and, after doing all those initial things we always promised we would do, we tend to go one of a few ways.

There are the hands-on grandparents who take the pressure off their children by looking after the next generation down, those who get into a venture such as writing a book or perfecting a project that they finally can dedicate so much more time to, embarking on a sorting out mission (your house, health, finances etc.), or even going on that cruse you always promised yourself. But when that is all sorted there is time to think.

While our powers of decision making are called upon less and less as we get older, some of us become the go to family member when the younger ones need advice because we have had maximum time to experience so much, but when that son, daughter, niece, nephew or grandchild askes one of those really difficult life questions you have three bits of ammunition to fall back on as you give the answer.

Of course we oldies are truly blessed with experience, but you have to team it up with greater or lesser amounts of the two other variables in the equation; logic or intuition.  I have come to the conclusion that logic seems really straight forward but then there are always the variables which have the bad habit of making everything from offered advice to big decisions really hard work.  So I tend to use my powers of ‘sixth sense’ with varying levels of success.   Even now, as old as I am, I have decided that, if my ability to be really intuitive is ever going to improve I need to work at it and, as always, the internet has some suggestions as to how.  So now that I have found some information it seems a shame not to share it.

I also found out that today, May 10th is celebrated as Trust your Intuition Day so, though I am writing two months in advance, I hope that LPG will post this message on the day I have asked.  It might give readers something to do with the last days of lockdown…

TP shares some information about this celebratory day and how to improve your powers of intuition…
