Getting the pop-ups to pop down!

13 May 2021

Dear LPG,

We are all getting used to seeing advertisements on the side of anything we look up online these days. I knew nothing about shopping online until I needed to learn to get my groceries during lockdown, and the threat of a Christmas where we might not be able to get close enough to family members to give a present, meant that I learnt a lot more when trying to buy those presents online.

The adverts are everywhere when I open my tablet and I must say that I still find it worrying that they know exactly what we have been looking for recently and the adverts remind us of those very items.

The adverts that really are upsetting though, are the pop-up ones that appear when you get to a web site. I am talking about the advert that appears in the middle of the screen and forces the rest of the screen to become so dark that you can’t read the information you went to the site to see in the first place.

There are lots of complicated instructions online which show ways of getting rid of the problem, but I found some relatively straight forward ones. Having come across the information that helped me to get most of those pop-ups to pop-off the other day, I would like to pass the instructions on to fellow readers with similar problems.

I hope it helps…

RL, Norwood

LPG agrees with RL but offers a word of caution. Depending on your level of expertise, perhaps the way forward would be to get a younger and more IT-informed friend or relative to work with you if you plan to have a go yourself….
