The ‘outside / inside’ - ‘old / young’ balance…

13 Jun 2021

Dear LPG,

Every now and then when I find myself drawn to the LPG website, I scroll down to some of the earlier articles, and while doing that recently I came across your post which featured on 24/05/20, and which appears to blame age for robbing us of our physical good looks (►►►).

I think although many still believe that to be true, times are changing somewhat.  I agree that there are many people who accept this to be the truth because youth and beauty have been historically accepted to go hand in hand, but people in general are living longer and that includes the rich and famous.

Actors, singers and stage performers are among the celebrities who opt to remain in the spotlight as they age and, while we oldies are now accepting that there are also many older people of prominence who are not physically beautiful, they are holding their own.  They are also living longer and there are some that are still regarded as up there with the beautiful younger ones.

We all know that staying young now is a complete industry all its own and men and women from all walks of life are becoming more ready to choose to go under the knife for the sake of that ‘look’.  I must admit to buying some of those frighteningly expensive preparations that are designed to produce the same result and, if people don’t look too closely some of us can get away with murder.  It has been quite a long time since we older women have been known as the ‘purple rinse brigade’.

Many older men make more of an effort too, because their cosmetics have finally surfaced and become so acceptable that our supermarket shelves display a lot more than aftershave these days.

With all that said, there have always been plain people and beautiful people and perhaps as we get older people are more likely to take one’s beauty of character into consideration as well as what is on the outside.

Age gives us time to accumulate a portfolio of achievements and accomplishments which become, in my opinion, equally as, and often much more important than what we look like, so I would remind the readers of LPG that the outer appearance cannot replace the very important inner beauty that we all have.
