Numbers; more than mathematical tools?

13 May 2022

Dear LPG readers,

Did you know that today has been named National Numeracy Day?  This is the day when the NSPCC try their best to help the young to enjoy one of those subjects that I know   I would rather have skipped when I was at school all those years ago, although I suspect that maths homework is a bit easier for the children now because every phone and computer has a calculator.

Because we never had such things, I think that we older people are more likely to be able to see numbers and do mathematical things with them in our heads, but the question to ask yourself today is, ‘are they still significant if you take away the four basic disciplines that school taught about how to use them?’  When you take away the urge to add, subtract, multiply, or divide them, or even if you have never lost the drive that compels you to do that a lot, I bet that nearly every one of us finds themselves occasionally coming across the same number repeatedly during the space of a period of time (a day, or a month or even all of our lives).  Have you ever wondered if numbers have messages in them?

I have just learned that there is a whole science behind the principle of Synchronicity and the messages that the numbers you come across in your life can offer.  I know that over the years of my relatively long life there are things that I have learned not to do on certain days and seeing certain reoccurring numbers more than once in a day gets me thinking numerically.

So while today is all about acknowledging the ‘fun’ in maths for children who are trying to grasp the basic principles, I would like to share a little online information I have found about the significance of number symbolism.
