I am sure it is all over now, but I wonder how it went?

30 Jul 2021

Dear LPG,

I am a lady of a certain age and I have spent the past couple of weeks missing my beloved Coronation street because of the football on the television.  Well, that is not strictly true although I have had to rearrange my schedule to catch the morning after reruns of the episodes.

I am wondering how many other ladies of a certain age were put out because football interrupted our normal viewing.  I have always had problems watching a ball dot around the television screen for ninety minutes at a time and, even though there are so many other television channels, my recent weekday evenings have just not been the same.

I have a lot of friends who feel the same way but, although I don’t really have much interest, I have to admit to having felt a sense of pride when I found out that we got a bit closer to victory last month on June the 29th, even though the news announcement was as much information as I really needed to hear.

With this in mind I thought it would be good to write my thoughts on the subject down before the final outcome of this year’s tournament is revealed, and whatever has happened by the time that this message is posted, I think that I am a football fan just for now.

It all takes me back to the last time I really got fired up about a bit of football.  I have asked LPG to post my message today because it was exactly 55 years ago that England won the World Cup and, even though I was neither a soap opera nor football fan then, there was something very special about seeing it all on the news.

I am writing this well in advance of the results, and as they say on television, ‘normal service will have been resumed’ by now.  The results of this year’s football will be history and I do hope that the UEFA Euro 2020 accolade finds its way to England for a while, even though I am not, and have never been a real football fan.

But whatever happened this year, I thought all the real members of the football faithful might like to remind themselves of our 55-year-old triumph one more time…
