The rise and possible fall of the big little energetic issue?

08 Nov 2021

Dear LPG,

I know that we are not altogether there yet, but it is getting colder and there has been a lot of official warnings about the fact that Electricity is going to get more expensive and, when you put those two nuggets of information together, there is some worry that comes with the mixture.

Most know the basics; wear lots of layers of clothing, keep drinking warm drinks, only heat the rooms that you use and try to keep on the move.  I have also read that cling film or bubble wrap on the windows will help and, depending on what sort of heating you have, running washing machines and dish washers at night can make a significant difference too.  It was good to have it confirmed that smart meters don’t really make any difference to your power consumption unless your conscience forces you to check the readings all the time and shutting the curtains during the day can also make a difference.

But there are still questions on the subject that have us arguing.

I think that one of the bigger questions is if keeping all the radiators going on a low setting all day is less expensive than only turning them on when you get cold and need them?

I have been looking up what can be done to keep our bills down and although much of the information I found has not changed that drastically, I thought it worth adding a reminder to the LPG pages.
