From little acorns… something helpful to add rather than take away…

29 Nov 2021

Dear LPG,

We may not understand much more than the simplest principles that made the recent COP 26 conference so important, and even if we no nothing else we are learning how important it is that we act now to make sure that our children still have some of the ozone layer left. It is also common knowledge that we each have to do our part to protect it.  I am sure that everyone will have noticed that whenever the subject is being talked about, so many of the officially suggested ideas for helping to preserve it, focus on what we individuals can give up?  We are told that turning off appliances at the wall socket rather than leaving them on standby and using less water would be a start, although I still have a problem with the thought of having a composter full of worms in my back garden.  The truth is that even for many of us older less technological types, we have come to rely on all the gadgets that we have around us these days and giving them up is not easy.

But, depending on which online scientific website you look at, there is one positive thing that we can do to help which constitutes starting something rather than stopping yet another habitual aspect of the life that we have become used to, and that is find a place for a tree.

I am not suggesting that a potentially great oak tree stuck right in the middle of your garden, doomed to confiscate all your neighbours sunlight in future years, provoking neighbours to court cases and arguments about cutting off branches and throwing them back over the fence is the way forwards but, if we have a garden with space for one more little tree, perhaps planting one is something we can add which might help

It is winter now and, apparently the best time to get your roots down in there is spring so, if the idea appeals, there are a few months to consider and plan your new bit of green.

…just a thought.

JS offers a little information which might spur on any tree planting plans…
