...the voice of pensioners

Every picture tells a story (chapter 40): A springy thought in the middle of winter…

20 Dec 2021

Dear LPG,

I often think that we pensioners are relatively lucky because we don’t have to get up and out as early as the workers, most of the time. But the other day I did need to leave early and in December that can usually mean two things.  The need to prepare to have a cold and wet journey.

There is one consolation though, and that is the fact that I live so near my local park that most of my journeys start with a walk through it to the bus stop.  There is something special about walking through the quiet of the park before getting to the hustle and bustle of the main road.  It was a particularly cold and damp morning but as I passed all the trees with their leafless branches I spotted the one in the picture with its flowers.

I felt the need to take this snap and got my mobile phone out just as I was passing one of my neighbours and her dog.   We started talking about the weather and how dismal the day was turning out to be and I mentioned the tree.  I just thought it refreshing, but she knows about these things and mentioned that there are many winter flowering trees.

I know nothing about gardening but, as I continued to walk, I found myself thinking about two things.  How the budding tree had cheered me up a bit as it served to remind me that next spring is always on the way.  I was also reminded about just how ignorant I am when it comes to anything to do with gardening but, having seen that tree, I am seriously considering finding something that blossoms in winter to cheer my garden up a bit.

I am a person who has no idea when it comes to any kind of cultivation, but I did look online.   I thought that for those who appreciate the greenery around them, now that I have a bit more of an idea, I should share what I learned…
