‘Cleaning up’ both literally and financially perhaps?

28 Jun 2022

Dear LPG,

Here is something worth thinking about.  We have all had far too much time on our hands lately and I remember that when the whole lockdown regime started one of the first things that the media suggested we do with our time was to have a sort out.

I wonder how many readers did a bit of cleaning in the spring of 2020.  I got stared in my cellar and found so many things that I had forgotten were there but I also spent far too much time in front of the television as well.

One genre of television program that I really got interested in was all those highlighting antiques.  I think that the money that serious collectors will pay for the oddest of things gave me a bit of an idea.  I was also really surprised that the presenters who nearly always would ask how the person trying to offload one of these items acquired it in the first place, would so often be met with a story of how the article in question was inherited from a grandparent who was given it by one of their grandparents although, as I   get older. some of the antiques don’t seem that old these days.  I get quite worried when I can remember when they were in fashion because it reminds me of how much of an antique I am becoming.

In my experience, the youngsters of today don’t really appreciate what is handed down to them and I have no doubt that there are many items that would get shoved in a draw if we oldies gave it to children or grandchildren.  So perhaps the answer is making sure such an heirloom goes to someone who will really value it rather than a family member who will never use or wear it.

While I was on line I took a look at another aspect of the antique world.  I was surprised to learn about those things that many of us older people might have bought, used, upgraded stashed somewhere in the nooks and crannies of their homes, and forgotten.  You will be surprised when you learn just what items are quite collectable these days.

I found a few lists and hope that it might be a good idea to pass them on just in case there is a mini goldmine under your stairs.  After all, I suppose we, the relative antiques of our communities must have a few potential antique things that it might be worth putting on the market.
