A day of achievement for everyone…

24 Mar 2023

Dear LPG,

I have always said that I would like to write something to be posted on the LPG website. The problem is that every time I think about getting started, I can’t think of anything to write, but I was surfing the internet recently and noticed how many writers are inspired by the many celebration days that we now have sprinkled all over our calendar, and I think that I have found one worth noting.

Just in case you did not know today is the International Day for Achievers.

Apparently this is a day to recognise the many achievements that the people around you have accomplished and let them know that you have noticed.  There are the big ones of course, like the effect that the Covid vaccine has made to us after the past two years, and then there are our personal favourites.  I have to say I am really amazed at how many functions the smart watch I was given can do.

After we have finished thinking big, perhaps it is a day to be mindful of what has been achieved by your friends.  Has one of them managed to give up smoking or learnt more about how to use a computer or their smart phone?  Could a comment of encouragement from you make their day even more special?

And what have you achieved.  We can get into a bit of a rut at this time of year where the days just go on and on while we feel that we have achieved very little. If this is the case perhaps today is a day to set yourself a few goals for this day next year.

Here is a challenge from me to you.

I challenge readers to get a diary and write down one, just one sentence about one thing that you have achieved at the end of each day.  Mine includes things like getting out to the shops, finally finishing a knitted jumper that I started for my granddaughter two years ago (even though it is too small for her now), having a chat with a friend which left us both feeling good about life, registering 5000 steps in one day on my smart watch (a personal high), and, if LPG posts my message, I can add sharing a little bit of personal wisdom with the rest of the world.

I think that achievement is what life is all about; the little ones and the personal ones, as well as the internationally recognised ones…

Reading those sentences back to yourself on a lonely winters evening can be really encouraging sometimes…
