Practise if you can…

25 Sep 2022

Dear LPG,

How many times have you heard it said that practise makes perfect?  I know that you are not likely to remember your first ever introduction to this world very clearly, but you arrive and that must be a bit of a jolt in the first place, and if you don’t take a breath instinctively you are likely to have experienced your first ever smack right then and there.

Isn’t it easy to forget all those things that we do without thinking about them as soon as we are born.  I am talking about breathing, crying, moving, ingesting, and filling a nappy.  Then it is not long before we learn to walk, start talking and work out what we are not allowed to do.

As we get on with our lives, we spend so much time practising all those things that we do more or less instinctively, that we don’t even think about until we get a bit older.

I have a very dear friend who is in his mid-eighties and recently fell ill leaving him in bed for a few weeks.  It was not fun to see him asleep for so much of the time, but as soon as he first felt well enough to get out of bed again he had a bit of a shock.  He found managing to actually successfully walk a real challenge.

He tells me that he has not forgotten how but it can be frightening just how quickly your leg muscles have problems with finding the strength to do something they have been doing for you all your life.

It is all getting a bit better now but, with hindsight and a look at the internet, we learned that he may have benefited from some regular exercises while getting better but still stuck in bed, and having tried it, he tells me that he wished that he had started to do a few moves a bit earlier.

So, if you are reading this page while getting over an illness which has kept you in bed for a bit, or if you visit someone who is doing just that, perhaps the links below might be of some help…
