Don’t let trendy fashion leave you too far behind…

09 Jul 2023

Dear LPG,

I have always thought that as the ladies I have observed during my lifetime have got older, they all seem to keep up with fashion trends for a while. Still, there comes a point in their lives when the modern trends move on without them, and their fashion remains as it was and becomes even more unique.

It has to be said that I am making this observation from a man’s point of view, so it could be flawed, and I want to emphasise that I think that all the ladies I come into contact with look perfect as, and after, they find that point.

I hope that my following comment will not come over as chauvinistic in any way and, perhaps it is the case that my man’s point of view is also evident when I comment that many of us older men on the other hand, especially the ones who don’t have a wife or partner making their fashion choices for them (like me) are so busy observing the ladies that they might not be focussing on maintaining the same clothing choices which is affecting their visual first-impression status.

Can I say here that I am not looking to catch myself another soulmate at my time of life (although that might be nice)? I can’t help looking at the other side of the gender fence as I make my way through life. The problem is that I am also very stuck in my fashion ways, as a trip through the internet taught recently.

I stumbled upon a whole collection of subtle hints on ways that the older man can cross over from that ‘stuck in the fashion trends of yesteryear’ rut to the ‘new more distinguished version of you’ look, and suggest that, even though the internet’s idea of the ‘old man’ appears to be perhaps 50, and a lot of what I found was American, there may be a few hints worth the older man’s time, whichever part of the western world he lives in.
