One of the most important skills you can acquire…

Dear LPG
I was just wondering what you think you do best, or do you (like me) class yourself as a jack of all trades but a master of none? At this time in your life, it may be time to specialise and work out what you want to be known for. I took that on board, and I have found myself a project, which is a reason to get up and get going in the mornings.
I read somewhere on your blog that you can become a friend to yourself and the people in your life, especially as you become a person with less and less human support around you, and as you get older, that is so true.
But being too busy with the tasks you set yourself can sometimes leave you with a focus point where everything else you need to do in your daily life feels interrupted.
Now that I am all fired up, and my project is underway, one of the most significant interruptions I might encounter is often that friend that phones nearly daily. That person who, when you can see that the phone call is from them, you feel that you would like to dodge it because it is going to take so much time to answer if you pick up the phone that you might as well kiss at least the next hour and a half goodbye productivity-wise.
When you answer the phone to that person you know well, remember the wealth of service you are performing by just saying yes or mmm now and then. Even if you are not paying attention to what is being said, just being the person at the other end of the phone can mean so much to a lonely person.
There are perhaps two ways to go when in this situation: give up, sit down with a cuppa and appreciate the significant thing you are doing, or, if you have mastered the skill of multitasking, invest in one of those earpieces that will allow you to talk and get on with your project to some degree. They don’t call them hands-free’ kits for nothing!
