What sort of procrastinator are you?

Dear LPG readers,

I have a habit of taking a look at some of the older posts which are featured on LPG pages and found this one recently.

This is exactly what happened to me.  I opened a second bank account years ago when I was still one of the workers of the world.  I had received a substantial tax rebate and thought that putting the money in my then only current account would result in its gradually disappearing as I overspent, so I opened a separate account.

I know that, at the time I had real plans for the money, which is why I opted for another current account, but work and time got in the way and I just left it there.  I remembered it from time to time and I have to admit to seeing the letter which warned me that I needed to do something about it, but life and so many other things got in the way and it was not until I found a good use for it that I paid it much attention at all.

By then it was well and truly dormant and reading the message below reminded me of just how time consuming it was to get my money back.

I feel that just reading what that post has to say might be the jolt that gets some readers who have an account that they have forgotten, to do what needs to be done.    Perhaps the odd repeat of this message every couple of years might serve as a reminder to readers to take a look at their accounts.

The internet tells that some £4.5 billion is currently overflowing into our banks’ suspense accounts as they become dormant and it took me a lot of effort to reclaim my few thousand, and some banks start the process after as little as 12 month’s inactivity.

Perhaps there should be a day named as National ‘check your bank accounts day’ to remind everyone that just paying £5 into such a bank account, or even taking some money out might save a lot of problems in the future.
